    What: Mini-Barn Quilt Workshop

    Where: Southeast Austin Health & Wellness Center

    When: Saturday, May 4th from 10:30-3:00pm This is a painting class, no quilting or sewing skills are necessary. 

    Who: Austin Modern Quilt Guild members and friends

    How much: FREE - donations accepted to the Austin Modern Quilt Guild PayPal account 

    Join us to paint a 12"x12" barn quilt in the design of your choice!  You don't need a barn! Hang it on your house, in your office or in your sewing space.  Hang it anywhere you'd like to bring a little bit of quilty goodness into your world!

    AMQG member, Beth Chinderle, will guide us through the process of designing, mapping out and painting your mini-Barn Quilt in this fun workshop at the Southeast Austin Health & Wellness Center on Saturday, May 4th from 10:30-3:00pm.  This is a painting class, no quilting or sewing skills are necessary.  Review the materials list to see what you will need to supply and what the guild will provide.


    This event is free, but it’s important to register on the

    Quilted Shoes Workshop

    Join us to make a pair of quilted sneakers!  Austin Modern Quilt Guild President, Tessa Gonzales, will guide us through the process of designing, and constructing your own pair of quilted sneakers!

    Materials Required to purchase in advance: 

    • Buckle Bee Bags - Happy Feet! Quilted Sneaker Kit

      • Instructions, the shoe inserts and everything you need for attaching the soles to the uppers are included in this kit.  The kits are frequently restocked.  

      • If you have trouble finding your size - try Tandy Leather and/or Maker's Leather Supply.  Search for "sneaker kit" on their website(s).

    • You’ll need 2 yards of 1.75” binding 

    • ½ yard of quilting weight cotton for the uppers, tongue, and binding

    • ¼ yard (Fat Quarter preferred) for lining

    • ½ yard double sided fusible foam (Bosal In-R-Form, or Pellon Flex Foam FF79F2)

    • ½ yard midweight fusible interfacing (Pellon SF101)

    • ⅜” Two Part eyelets (36 of them). Hammer will be provided.

    • Laces 60” for high tops, 45” for low tops

    • We will assemble the shoes in the workshop.  Be sure to do any “piecing” of your quilt top before you come to class.  Assembling your quilt sandwich, quilting and cutting the pattern pieces will be done in class.

    • Free patterns and more information can be found here.  (The “Classic 3 IN 1” pattern is included with the Buckle Bee Bags kit)

    This event is free, but you must come to class with the required supplies.

    Our very own, Lydia Giangregorio is coming to our June meeting to teach us about Natural Dyeing and Quilting.

    We will also be able to try our own hand at using Natural Dyes at her workshop Saturday, June 8th. See Intro to Natural Dyes in Quilting to learn more and sign up for the workshop.

    Learn how to use local foraged materials, common food waste to create beautiful, light-fast natural dyed fabric to use in your quilts! Participants will learn the basics of preparing (mordanting) cotton fabric, and then experiment with a selection of dyes using prepared fabric provided by the instructor. Experiment with a range of techniques including eco-prints, over-dyeing, and using historical dye plants to obtain a rainbow of colors! The possibilities of color are all around us in the garden, kitchen, or on the trail. Participants will receive a workshop handout with recipes, advice, and an extensive list of resources. Participants will dye their own 8 Fat Quarter bundle to start their own naturally-dyed stash.

    Looking for a weekend of sewing without any interruptions?  Join fellow quilty friends for two days of sewing at Over The Top Quilting Studio in Cedar Park.  
    Sew with your friends during the day, sleep in your own bed at night.

        Saturday, June 22nd, 2024  from 9:00am - 9:00pm
        Sunday, June 23rd, 2024 from 9:00am - 6:00pm
    Cost: $50 for the weekend
    Registration Limit:  8
    The studio has design walls, cutting tables, ironing stations, refrigerator.
    Registration for this event will open 60 days prior to the start of the event.
    Masks are optional.

    Ashelyn Downs, of Urban Dwell Studio will be with us in-person for a trunk show!  Ashelyn will have a dozen or so projects that feature her improv process.  She will discuss with us her fabric selection process and how she creates minimalism improv blocks!  There will be time for Q&A after the meeting and each attendee will receive take-home documents with basic tips and an outline of her process.
