Embrace the Chaos - An Exercise in Controlled Randomness- taught in-person by Libs Elliot

Using only paper and pencils - no computers required! - Libs will walk students through a series of worksheet exercises that mimic the programming language she uses to generate her quilt patterns.  By using controlled elements in a random way, each participant will end up with a unique quilt pattern layout - no two Chaos Quilts are the same!

As a group, we'll discuss design flow and tweak our individual layouts.  Then we'll cut fabric and work on piecing our designs, using provided block-building instructions.  At the end of the class, each participant will leave with his/her own random geometric quilt design and will have the knowledge required to complete this project.  This full day workshop allows time for drafting, design and initial block construction.

    Class Supply List:

    Fabric -

Libs suggests bringing a total of at least 2 yards of fabric (or 8-12 fat quarters or half yard cuts), in a variety of 5-10 different prints/solids that you love and would like to see together in a quilt.  Go as simple or wild as you like!  For fabric inspiration, look up #embracethechaosquilt (or even #rebelquilt) on Instagram as the quilts we'll be drafting will be similar in style.

    Additional Supplies -

    • sewing machine
    • colored pencils or markers - will be used to color our quilt designs
    • pencil & eraser
    • small ruler
    • straight pins
    • scissors
    • thread
    • quilting ruler - unfinished block sizes are 6 1/2" or 8 1/2", so bring a ruler that makes it easiest to cut up these sizes.
    • rotary cutter*
    • cutting mat*
    • iron*

*AMQG will supply some cutting stations and ironing stations.

Improv Piecing with Dynamic Stripes - taught in-person by Libs Elliot

In this workshop, we will explore visually dynamic striped piecing and create one-of-a-kind striped compositions.  We'll review examples of how color, size and angles can affect visual outcome.  We will cover strip-piecing, and how to cut equilateral and half-square triangles.  Libs will share tips on ironing, pinning to line up seams.  Participants will be able to make choices on what kind of stripes they want to make and how they want to cut their block pieces so, in the end, no two compositions are alike.  During the course of the class, we'll share our progress for group input.

By the end of the session, participants will have the knowledge and motivation to complete the project at home.

    Class Supply List:

    Fabric:

    • (8) 1/2 yard cuts of solid or tonal print fabrics - Options:
      • a range of one or two colors from light to dark values OR
      • black and white (or several different blacks and whites) OR
      • high contrast colors e.g. bright blues and bright reds

    Additional Supplies:

    • pencil or marking tool (pen, chalk pen, marker, etc.)
    • straight pins
    • stitch ripper
    • scissors
    • thread
    • sewing machine
    • 6"x24" ruler
    • Optional: Hex 'n More Ruler by Jaybird quilts for cutting equilateral triangles - a great ruler for cutting hexagons, half-hexes, kites and triangles
    • rotary cutter*
    • cutting mat*
    • iron*
